HEE-YOUNG LIM
CELLO
“Technical mastery, generous tone and a captivating performance.”
The Strad
Bio
Praised by the Washington Post as “a deeply gifted musician, with a full, singing tone, near-flawless technique and a natural lyricism that infused nearly every note she played” cellist Hee- Young Lim has quickly established herself as one of the most charismatic and fast-rising cellists of her generation.
Born in Seoul, Hee-Young Lim was accepted to the Pre-College division of Korean National University of Arts and Yewon Arts School, winning prizes for Excellence in Music and the Most Distinguished Alumni Award. She entered the Korean National University at age 15, as the youngest student ever to be accepted. She moved to the United States to further her education at the New England Conservatory. Upon graduation at NEC, she went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, studying with Philippe Muller, where she graduated with ‘Highest Distinction’ (‘mention très bien à l’unanimité’). She is also a graduate of Hochschule für Musik ‘Franz Liszt’ Weimar, where she earned her Konzertexamen degree “mit Auszeichnung” (summa cum laude).

“As debut solo albums go, the Korean cellist Hee-Young Lim’s programme of French cello concertos – with the LSO under Scott Yoo – is certainly at the upper end of the assuredness spectrum. Lim brings an exceptionally refined, silkily lyrical sound to the whole. In fact her very first Saint Saëns entry verily glides in…a gentle and sophisticated reading which by turns takes its time and pushes things on in all the right places, supported by a softly glowing orchestra.”
Charlotte Gardner
Gramaphone Magazine
Hee-Young was appointed as the Principal Solo Cellist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, after an extended (four-year) search to fill this position. She was one of the first female Asian cellists ever lead a section in a major European orchestra. Teaching has been a very significant aspect of Hee-Young’s career. She has given master classes at Seoul’s Ewha University, Rotterdam Conservatory, Paris Reuil-Malmaison Conservatoire, and Jakarta University, among others. Currently she serves as a Professor of Cello at the Beijing Central Conservatory.
In-demand as a soloist, she has in recent years performed with distinguished ensembles including the Deutsche Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Budapest Radio Philharmonic, the Warsaw National Philharmonic, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the Baden-Baden Philharmonie, the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, the Bandung Philharmonic, the KBS Symphony, Beijing Symphony, Wuhan Symphony, Daegu Symphony, Concerto Malaga, Camerata Galaga Chamber Orchestra, the Korean Chamber Orchestra, the Incheon Symphony Orchestra, the Ningbo Symphony, Zagreb Soloists and many others.
“Exceptional sense of lyricism, an artist to keep an eye on.”
Washington Post
Hee-Young has been a featured guest artist on the Korean Radio Broadcasting station, WETA, WFMT, KUHF, RTKK, and Polski radio.
As an enthusiast advocate of contemporary music, Hee-Young is privileged to champion the work of today’s composers. Most recently, Columbia University in New York commissioned her to give the European premiere of Peter Susser’s Cello Suite in Paris. 19/20 season, she will appear at the Tong Yeong International Music Festival, soloist with the Zagreb Soloists, Jakarta Symphony, Orchestras in China and Korea including Korean Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, Daegu, Kwangju, Gangnam, Beijing Symphony and Wuhan Symphony, Complete the Bach Suite Cycle, Duo récital with cellist Philippe Muller in Beijing, teaching at the Vienna Summer Academy and Galicia Music Festival in Spain and serve as a jury at the IBLA International Competition in Italy.

“If Hee-Young Lim’s virtuosity places her on a level with several of her fellow cellists, she outshines many in the warmth and expressiveness of her tone, which is of truly rare beauty.”
BBC Music Magazine
Her debut recording with the London Symphony Orchestra for Sony Classical in December 2018 has received critical acclaim from Gramophone, Strad and BBC Music Magazine. Her second recording of Russian Cello Sonatas is expected to be released in 2019.
“A remarkable cellist who has flawless technique and unique sound “
“Hee-Young Lim is certainly one of the best cellists of recent years and appears as a safe bet of the rising generation”
Philippe Muller
Reviews
“Unforced lyricism is the key signature of this attractive French recital from a young Korean cellist. She draws a beautifully rounded speaking tone from her 1714 Guarneri ‘filius Andreae’, consistent right across the registers. The finales are littered with octaves and heavy double-stopping that she integrates seamlessly within a cantabile that’s never louder than lovely.”
Peter Quantrill
The Strad
“In the slow movement, Grave, [Lim] is spellbinding, the lightness of the first movement here taken over by deeper reflection; her playing of the final bars is very moving. The romp-like Finale (Joyeux) goes well, with the LSO on good form throughout, and the two ‘encores’ are so well-played they ought to not be regarded as fillers.”
Classical Source
“In the highly melodic opening movement Lim produces a joyously lyrical mood. Exquisite in the middle movement is the profound weeping quality [she] develops. Celebratory and passionate at turns in the Finale Lim revels in the bittersweet drama.”

Teaching
In 2018, Hee-Young Lim was appointed to Professor of Cello at the prestigious Beijing Central Conservatory of Music. She also holds master classes at festivals and academies around the world.
I love using my performing experience to work with young people on all aspects of being a musician, an artist, and a cellist – how to play the instrument, how to build a career, how to prepare for and deal with auditions, as well as how to distinguish yourself in this enormously challenging industry.
Fostering creativity is essential to a student’s musical growth and artistic development. It takes time to ingrain technique and musicality as well as to find and express the inherent uniqueness in one’s musical voice.
I’m thrilled to help students in the same way so many people helped me. To share knowledge and nurture talent is a privilege for me.
I have no ‘set method’ – I discover what works for each student individually. Likewise, I try to offer a complete education. I pass on all the valuable methods that I learned from my teachers as well as those things I’ve learned through a decade of concerts, competitions and orchestra auditions. I encourage all my students to prepare for work in all types of ensembles whether in an orchestra, chamber ensemble or as a soloist.
With competition so fierce, it’s essential to use time efficiently. “Self-discipline” is the key word. A good training must also shape one’s work ethic, helping the student to concentrate under unfavorable conditions and go through challenges that come in the real world, after graduation.
I’m always looking forward to meeting talented students. Those who are interested in studying with me, please feel free to apply one of my next masterclasses!

Why Music?
“Music is a science. Music is mathematical. Music is a foreign language. Music is History. Music is physical education. Music develops Insight and demands research. Music is all these things, but most of all, MUSIC IS ART. That is why we teach music. Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life…But so you will be human…So you will recognize beauty…So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world…So you will have something to cling to…So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good- in short, more LIFE.”
Ludwig van Beethoven
